Crossover alignments for analogue and digital active loudspeakers

Abstract Active loudspeaker systems employ multiple drive units each having a dedicated amplifier, an approach that can lead to more efficient use of amplifier power with better dynamic control of the individual drive units. Such systems give a greater design freedom in terms of the form of crossover alignments that can be used and the method by which they can be implemented. This paper describes crossovers appropriate for both analogue and for digital implementations and the design compromises are reviewed. A hybrid approach is also described where a simple analogue crossover strategy is combined with broadband digital equalization. Finally, a technique specific to the digital domain is presented, which employs noise-like impulse responses to disperse the interference patterns normally experienced in the off-axis response
